Doubt

So there is every time when I work in corporate programs on development liderskih skills “vysokopotentsialnyh employees”. Sooner or later the participant of the program approaches to me (sometimes at once two) and says, that is not assured that wishes to be the leader. He is confused and asks: whether it is normal, what he is visited by such doubts?

Certainly, it is normal. Many managers on the personnel for some reason consider, that leaders wish to become all. But the person can have a set of the reasons for unwillingness. Recently, working over the new book about development of leadership with Manfred Kets de Vrisom and Elizabeth Florent from INSEAD, we have defined some psychological difficulties which heads in process of advancement on a leadership ladder inevitably face.

  • Loneliness above.
    Leaders often should remain at own doubts and fears. After all both higher, and subordinate are not ready to see the leader who doubts or requires support.

  • Envy of colleagues.
    It not always positively affects relations, both on a workplace, and in private life.

  • Phenomenon “And what now?”.
    Having reached the important result, heads can feel, that one big project of their career is finished, and the following so big it is not visible yet.

  • Freedom lack.
    Of you constantly observe (not only on work) subordinates, colleagues, and since certain level — journalists, analysts, the power.

  • Test by the power.
    Not it is possible to all it with honour to pass, and it is clear to drop fear of potential leaders personal feeling and to spoil opinion on of associates.

  • Feeling of fault.
    Heads should make “necessary harm” — dismissing people, closing projects, destroying another's illusions. Not all are ready to pay for it in personal psychological comfort. The feeling of fault can arise and before the family for whom the leader has not enough time.

  • Eternal race.
    Was called as a milk mushroom — polezaj in a body: leaders cannot take a respite because the competition is high and behind new leaders always rise. It is necessary ready to be constant to prove, that you are worthy to remain above.

    You still wish to be the leader? It is good, if so. If accurately to imagine psychological complexities of such life, it is possible to be prepared for them, and all at you will turn out.
